Discord Launches Family Center to Enhance Online Safety for Young Users

Discord has introduced a tool called Family Center, aiming to enhance its platform’s suitability for children. This tool enables parents and guardians to monitor their kids’ activities more easily. Known as the preferred social media platform for gamers and hobbyists of all generations, Discord can be accessed on various devices including desktops, smartphones, and gaming consoles like Xbox and PlayStation. The introduction of Family Center is part of Discord’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience, promote safer internet practices, and foster a more family-oriented atmosphere.

Discord’s new Family Hub is an optional tool that allows parents to monitor their children’s activities on the platform. It helps parents learn more about who their kids are friends with and chat with them in the gaming community. This new feature has two main parts – an activity dashboard and a weekly email summary that includes all activities. The dashboard gives parents an overview of their children’s activities, such as recently added friends, servers they’ve joined or participated in, and the number of users they’ve chatted or called with. However, parents cannot see the content of the messages.

In addition to this, parents or guardians also receive a weekly summary of their children’s activities on Discord by email. Family Center can be found in user settings, but you must obtain your child’s consent before using this feature.

Announcing the launch of Family Center, Discord said in a statement: “Our goal with Family Center is to help foster productive dialogue about safer internet habits and create mutually beneficial ways for parents and teens to discuss their experiences online.”

Previous procedures

This isn’t Discord’s first attempt to clean up its platform. In June 2022, Discord announced AutoMod, an automatic keyword filter that helps moderators by detecting and blocking malicious messages and threats on the server or in the text of voice messages. This means that even if the Moderator is not present, the AutoMod tool will automatically identify and block the post by sending an alert to the Moderator, who can then browse the flagged post when they return.
